21 April 2020: Shit Happens

I had a lot of technical difficulties with this episode; it was apparently not sounding right to the listeners but was working fine on my end, and I couldn’t figure out what was wrong so I stopped early in frustration. I also lost connection during one song so it got cut out. The whole thing was embarrassing and I’m not going to post the recording, but this is the playlist.

Set 1

“I Want You to Love Me” by Fiona Apple

From her long-awaited new album Fetch the Bolt Cutters. I wasn’t sure which song to play, so I just picked the first track. I might play another next week.

“Dust” by Parquet Courts

I thought of this song earlier today and I don’t remember why. Maybe it was dusty, since that’s usually when it pops in my head.

“Space Humpin’ $19.99” by Lifter Puller

Lifter Puller is probably best known for being Craig Finn’s first band. (He would go on to form the Hold Steady.) But LP have their own cult following, and were really good in their own right. The sound is pretty different from the Hold Steady; where THS is more classic rock influenced, LP was more art-punk-y and angular; just listen to the synthesizer part and the weird time signatures. I feel like the Hold Steady is sunny day, summery music while Lifter Puller is more cloudy day music.

“Psychic Trauma” by Cloud Nothings

Didn’t have any reason for picking this song specifically, I just wanted to hear some Cloud Nothings.

“Death in the Park” by Archers of Loaf

From their second album Vee Vee. Their show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg got cancelled because of the virus, which is a bit of a bummer, but what are you gonna do? At least I’m getting a refund.

Set 2

“Raised Ranch Revolution” by Wheat

A highlight from a criminally underknown album by a criminally underknown band.

“Stoop Kid” by Car Seat Headrest

Stoop Kid's Afraid ot Leave His Stoop

Refers to the minor character from Hey Arnold.

“All My Friends” by LCD Soundsystem

Just a fucking a beautiful song. One of the best about time passing.

“Nobody” by Mitski

I didn’t actually play this one because I stopped the show after “All My Friends”, but this was going to be the last song in the set.
